Free sites:
Baseball Reference -- I'm sure that everyone reading this already knows of the site, but I'm still including here just in case. The site does have some misinformation, which they apparently have no interest in correcting, but even so, it's still a valuable free resource.
California Digital Newspaper Collection -- As the name implies, this is a site that's dedicated solely to the digitization of old newspapers from California.
Digital Library Collections -- This is another site that covers a wide range of sporting topics. For my purposes, The Sporting News Player Contract Cards have been quite helpful.
Elephind -- Massive free newspaper site.
Google Newspaper Archive -- Apparently Google has pulled the plug on this digitization project, but what was added before they decided to cancel it is still viewable.
Historic Oregon Newspapers -- As the name implies, this is a site that's dedicated solely to the digitization of old newspapers from Oregon.
Internet Archive -- I haven't used this site yet, but I'm sure that there's going to be things of use to me (and you) whenever I do.
Lantern -- This site focuses mostly on old periodicals of the entertainment sort. I haven't looked myself, but I would imagine that one can find plenty of articles on athletes who have dipped their toes into radio, television, film, etc.
Library of Congress -- This site is a wealth of information for researchers and entertainment seekers alike. For this blog's purposes, the Chronicling America section has proven to be the most useful. There are partial selections from over 150,000 newspapers, and what has to be over a million pages total for people to peruse, download, etc. The Spalding's Base Ball Guides has been of some assistance too, especially for the guys that went on to play in the majors.
Stats Crew -- Much like Baseball Reference, this site does have it's share of incorrect information, but can still be useful to those who are willing to double-check any information gotten from the site.
Pay sites:
Newspapers.com -- This probably the most popular subscription site for anyone doing research, and is worth every cent of the monthly price in my opinion. [Note: One of my few splurges is a premium subscription to this site. If anyone ever needs something looked up, or a particular article emailed to them, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to help if I can.]
Newspaper Archive -- I haven't used this site yet, but I've been told that it's similar to Newspapers.com, though the selection of papers between the two sites is different to some degree.
The Oregonian Archive -- I'm loathe to include this one, if only because their rates are obscenely high. As a resource though, they have plenty of information that can't be found anywhere else. And it should be noted that this site is free to those with a Multnomah County (or one of the surrounding counties) library card.
